If you have tried different microfiber cleaning products, you’ve experienced first-hand that all microfiber cleaning cloths are not the same. So what should you look for when choosing the best microfiber cleaning cloth?
A well respected consumer magazine says you should always look for microfiber that has gone through a splitting process. Wikipedia says, “For microfiber to be effective as a cleaning product, it has to be split microfiber. If microfiber isn’t split during manufacturing, it isn’t much more than a very soft cloth, duster, or mop. Microfiber that is used in clothing, furniture, and other applications isn’t split because it isn’t designed to be absorbent, just soft. It’s important when buying microfiber cleaning products to make sure that they’re split.”
The splitting processes produce more surface area on the fibers. They become better able to absorb liquids, and better at cleaning and wiping dirt, dust, water, grease, oils, etc. Quality microfiber typically falls within a ratio range of 70/30 or 80/20 polyester to polyamide. Polyamide is more expensive to produce than polyester, but the polyamide (nylon) is necessary to make the cloths more effective at cleaning and drying.
Many cheaper cloths are made from 100% polyester and lack the blend necessary to truly be effective at cleaning. We are all familiar with the old saying, “you get what you pay for.” That adage is definitely true when used to discuss microfiber cleaning cloths. If you buy cheaper cloths you will find they may lose their shape faster, have more lint after washings which make them difficult to reuse, or just don’t perform. The microfiber cloths made from split fiber and a good polyester/polyamide blend may be more expensive to purchase, but generally will perform better and last longer. This ends up saving you money in the long run.
